Diet Drinks Increase Weight Gain

Avoid diet drinks. Ephedra products work better.

 

The study's bottom line: If you choose diet soda over regular soft drinks, your risk of obesity balloons!

In a study conducted by the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, researchers found that those consuming diet sodas gained more weight over the study period than their counterparts consuming regular soft drinks. The study followed more than 600 people for up to eight years. The participants had normal weight at the beginning of the study and ranged in age from 25 to 64. They were asked about soft-drink consumption: diet vs. regular and how many cans per day, etc. They were then monitored for several years yielding these incredible results.

Obesity raises the risk of many illnesses, including:

  • Heart disease

  • Cancer

  • Diabetes

  • Arthritis

Drink regular soft drinks, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was:

  • 33% for 1 to 2 cans each day

  • 47% for more than 2 cans each day.

Drink diet soft drinks, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was:

  • 55% for 1 to 2 cans each day

  • 57% for more than 2 cans each day.

For each can of diet soft drink consumed each day, a person's risk of obesity went up 41 percent.

These findings come from eight years of data collected by Sharon P. Fowler, MPH, and colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. The data was presented at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association in San Diego, CA.
